2019 Build Season Week 5 Article

As Week 5 comes to a conclusion, the Janksters continue to work diligently in the final stretch of build season. All of our team’s subcommittees have been dedicated to working as hard as they can to finish our robot, and have made substantial progress this week.

In the Mechanical committee, Chassis has worked on building gearboxes and manufacturing parts for the chassis. The students in the Hatch group switched the piston count from one piston to two, and has figured out how to mount the pistons. The Elevator subcommittee milled and manufactured parts for the first elevator and worked on the chain system for the first and second stages. They have also calculated and discussed routing the dyneema for the third stage. The girls handling the mechanism for Cargo have designed and manufactured the pivot arms and motor attachments to finalize mounting on the sliders. The subcommittee Many Projects is working on the bumpers for the robot and has started ironing the team numbers onto the bumper fabric.

After a very productive first half of Build Season, the Vision Team continues to refine code, creating new class files to make it easier to read and use. The current focus is on troubleshooting in anticipation of testing the code on JankyBot. The Programming Hatch subcommittee focused on finishing code for the chassis and the hatch mechanism. They are preparing code for another ultrasonic sensor, which will be used for signaling to the drive team during competitions. This week, the Programming Elevator subcommittee finished the code for both the cargo and elevator components, and has begun testing the code on Lola to ensure the elevator can get to its 10 preset heights without any issues.

The Business committee began to sew bows for the team’s students and mentors, assembling Perler bead bows for individual giveaways at competitions, as well as making buttons. Additionally, they have been preparing materials and documentation for upcoming events, including Robot Reveal Night and mentor’s Valentine’s Day party.

This past week the Electronics committee has continued working on the vertical board CAD and testing the horizontal board on the chassis frame. They have finalized cable management for the wires and tubing on the elevator mechanism and are currently continuing to explore mounting options. Electronics has also started 3D printing their sensor and camera mounts with the team’s new 3D printer.

The fifth week of build season may have ended, but the Janksters’ hard work has not. Check in next week for Team 1967’s progress as build season comes to a conclusion!
