2019 Build Season Week 3 Article

It’s halfway through the six week build season! The Janksters have been hard at work making adjustments to prototypes and integrating ideas across committees.

Mechanical has been working on finalizing calculations for mechanisms and CAD. Hatch subcommittee has been collaborating with the cargo group to integrate small parts of the Hatch mechanism onto Cargo’s mechanism (instead of having a separate frame), as well as beginning preliminary CAD. The elevator subcommittee calculated gearbox ratios and torque, and updated CAD as well. Chassis went through many changes, finalizing dimensions and switching the HAB level 2 platform-climbing mechanism from CAM wheels to pistons. They also communicated with the electronics committee to prepare components for the robot. The Many Projects subcommittee worked on moving the wood to the shed and making plans for the chassis frame. They also finished making angle cuts and the rocket base for the game field, which the team will use for practice.

The elevator and cargo programming subcommittees finished base code for the cargo mechanism, and have spoken to the chassis and elevator mechanical committees to learn about what programming would be needed for their components. Code was successfully deployed onto the 2018 robot, Lola, and the rookies became more familiar with coding in C++. Next week, the subcommittee will begin on both the elevator and robot lifting code. The programming vision and chassis subcommittee significantly improved the vision code this week, which is now able to calculate the distance of the tape from the camera and take offset (angled away) tape into account. They also began to tackle how to identify a particular piece of tape when there are multiple in the robot’s sight.

The electronics committee designed and started CAD for the electronics board, and finished crimping the wires on talons and victors. They also completed adding a magnetic door to the driver’s station. For batteries, the committee built mounts and replaced the electrical tape on the wires with heat shrink, which last longer and are more #aesthetic.

This week, the business committee finished the t-shirt and button design, which reflect the 2019 Deep Space theme. They’ve worked on building their social media presence and have been consistently posting team activity on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Check us out and follow us @Team1967!!

This past week, the Janksters made substantial progress toward their build season goals. Check in next week to read about Team 1967’s progress during Build Season Week 4!
