2019 Capital City Classic

From October 18 to 20, Team 1967 competed at Capital City Classic (CCC), an off-season competition held in Elk Grove, California, hosted by Teams 2073, 1678, and 3859.  Despite numerous hardships they encountered and several components breaking, the Janksters ended up placing 17th and was the first pick of the 8th seed alliance. Together, rookies and veterans acquired new knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience at Capital City Classic from the workshops held during the competition, and some even took on new leadership roles.

Throughout the competition, the Janksters worked and interacted with many other teams while having the opportunity to go to three workshops, each covering different subjects. Team 2643 formed a scouting alliance with Team 1967, which gave the scouting leads an opportunity to share and learn about scouting techniques and strategies. The Janksters were in 17th place leading into alliance selections. They were then picked to be in the 8th seed alliance and were able to partner up with Teams 3859, 2813 and 2035 for eliminations.

At Capital City Classic, Teams 1678, 971, 701, 4643, 3132, 1671, & 1323 taught at several workshops the Janksters had the opportunity to attend. The workshops spanned over a plethora of subjects: from field strategy, outreach, fabrication and more. Through these workshops, our team members were able to develop their technical and communication skills.

The Janksters not only learned something new from the workshops, but also from stepping up to new roles. The rookies were able to gain more experience and a deeper understanding of competition. The veterans had the opportunity to take the initiative and take on new leadership roles in instructing and teaching the rookies. The collaboration between the limited team members allowed our team to be successful despite the difficulties we encountered. Some highlights include the Janksters placing in one of the top spots for the entirety of Day One’s qualifications, and Pandora successfully leaping onto Hab level 2 for the first time ever.

Overall, Capital City Classic was a huge success! Team 1967 had the opportunity to learn and advance their skills through workshops and leadership opportunities. The students are extremely proud of the growth in their communication skills and the progress they have achieved. Capital City Classic has given the Janksters a spectacular closure to competitions with Pandora, their 2019 robot.
