Community Outreach

As a Jankster, each student member is inspired by the ideals of compassion, education, and service. Also, we keep in mind the mission and hallmarks of a Notre Dame education by embracing diversity in our team, creating a supportive community, and being educated for life outside of robotics.

LEAD Program:

The LEAD program is focused on the education of excelling 7th graders. We teach various workshops to expose these students to Robotics and give them a tour of our team during our busiest time- Build Season!

Toys for Tots:
We strive to reach out to our community by helping with events like Toys for Tots with BAE systems each year. During Toys for Tots, parents that can’t afford to buy Christmas presents for their children come to Santa Clara and we give a present to each child.

FLL Tournament:
A major event that we go to every year is the FLL tournament at Intel. We bring our robot to demonstrate how it works and teach the kids how the components work. We also share our experiences with high school robotics. Part of our volunteering is providing concessions or lunch to the teams.

Boot Camp:
An annual weeklong robotics summer camp at Notre Dame for incoming and current students. During the camp, girls learn the basics of CAD, programming, electronics, and business as well as teamwork. Many of the girls who go to Boot Camp later join our team.

Young Women’s Engineering Symposium:
YWES is an event that our very own Jankster members plan for young women from any school or team to attend. Throughout the day, women in various STEM-related careers hold workshops and talk about their occupations, ending the day with a forum to inspire others to become engineers.

Bring Your Kid to Work Day:
Starting in summer 2014, we have demonstrated our robot at Intel’s Bring Your Kid to Work Day. When kids come to see the team, we allow them to drive the robot, operate some of its mechanisms, and learn about how it works.

Team Social:
Each year, we hold a Team Social and invite 4-5 teams to our school during the Silicon Valley Regionals for a night of food, dancing, and fun. It is an excellent way to learn about other teams and bond amidst a stressful competition.

Maker Faire:
At this exciting fair showcasing new technologies and innovations, the Janksters hold a booth for our robot and interact with other booths to discover and spread our love for STEM.

Intro to Robotics STEAM Camp:
We hold our own workshop as a part of Notre Dame’s summer school, where middle and high schoolers can be exposed to STEAM through VEX and other activities.

Alumnae Event:

The Janksters demo their robot to Notre Dame alumnae at their reunion. We are able to show them the progress and changes the team has made since their high school experience.
